CIQ

Currently I am in the process of conducting research into effective critical reflection within a media environment. This Research is in conjunction with the Centre for Educational Research, University of Derby. 

It is my intention to use Stephen Brookfield's Critical Incident Questionnaire (CIQ) to gain knowledge of individual student perspectives. Therefore, as Media Moving Image students at BSDC you are requested to partake in this research (an excellent attribute you can put in your personal statement).

So what is reflection/critical reflection?

"When we reflect, we not only challenge our assumptions about why we do what we do, we can also help ourselves identify where we feel lacking and why we may be setting ourselves unnecessarily unachievable standards. How can we reflect on our approaches to our practice? What can we do? What can we uncover in the process?" (Hillier, 2005)

"Reflection is not, by definition, critical. It is quite possible to teach reflectively while focusing solely on the nuts and bolts of classroom process. For example, we can reflect about the timing of coffee breaks, whether to use blackboards or flip charts, the advantages of using a liquid crystal display (LCD) panel over previously prepared overheads, or how rigidly we stick to a deadline for the submission of students' assignments. All these decisions rest on assumptions that can be identified and questioned and all of them can be looked at from different perspectives. But these are not, in and of themselves, examples of critical reflection" (Brookfield, 1995)

"To put it briefly, reflection becomes critical when it has two distinctive purposes. The first is to understand how considerations of power undergird, frame, and distort educational processes and interactions. The second is to question assumptions and practices that seem to make our teaching lives easier but actually work against our own best long-term interests." (Brookfield, 1995)

"critical reflection focuses on the hunting of assumptions of power and hegemony. The best way to unearth these assumptions is to look at what we do from as many unfamiliar angles as possible" (Brookfield, 1995)

    When we were discussing what TV shows we've seen, because I learnt about a lot of new shows that I should check out and watch.

    During the talk about the flip cameras/ other cameras we will be using because I found it interesting and very helpful because of tip like not using the digital zoom.

    When my footage came out darker and unfocused than I had expected and seen before, because I felt left behind as everyones camera quality is better than mine.

When we were doing the induction with the cameras, it was helpful to find out how to prevent things from going wrong and i felt involved when he was passing round the lenses and showing the scratched and damaged ones.

    2. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most distanced from what was happening? when i was trying to get my files onto the hard drive and then having to convert them, it took forever and i couldn't get on with editing like i had planned on doing. i felt i was really far off task.

    When I was editing my video as I felt in control of what was happening and I was able to lessen the problem I was having with brightness.

    When I was doing the maths test because I felt I already knew it and did not need to sit through an hour of work when I could be editing.

    Paul showing me how to edit the light levels and add an extra video track because it helped me edit the video.

    I do not feel this happened because the teacher was very clear and I had little interaction with the students.

    when i finally started to edit and i was able to do what i wanted to do. I felt more in control of my work and more focussed.

    2. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most distanced from what was happening? when i was doing the maths test. Although i was doing something it wasn't really anything productive and i wanted to get on with my production.

    getting help with final cut. i initially felt really lost as i couldn't do what i wanted with the footage but once i was shown i felt a lot more positive about it.

    when people were on about final cut and talking about functions i'd never heard of. i didn't understand anything they were saying but needed help.

    Today i felt most engaged when i took the test on setting up an interview. This reason for this is because it allowed me to gain feedback on things i didnt do well on to allow me to correct them in the future.



    2. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most distanced from what was happening?

    Looking back on todays lesson, i understood the brief for the heritage progect however i didnt fully understand what the trent a dove project paperwork and planning side involves. For example what we need to do for pre production paperwork.




    3. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find most affirming and helpful?

    I found it extremely helpfull when Paul went over and explained what we need to do for the interactive media part of my viral video project. I orriginaly could not make sense of what exactly we had to do for this unit, but now that it has been explained what we have to include in it i now have a better understanding of what i need to do.
    I also found it helpfull when i was shown how to upload a word file to post my work onto my blog.


    4. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find the most confusing puzzling?

    I didnt find anything today confusing, everything was explained fully allowing me to understand what i needed to do.

    What suprised me was when we underwent the interview test. I found it very intresting and helpfull to see how other people approach setting up an interview giving me better view than just my own perseption.

    When i was doing the practical interview test, it was very moving as it gave us opportunity going up 1st to show what we do with courage also when we pulled away on what we needed to do to do an interview , we just did it without big plan and so, so this is practice for us to improve our awareness and reflecting. When the trent and dove people came in and explaining what was needed for us, this allowed us to understand and engage
